PEDAGOGY AND ARCHITECTURE

Good pedagogy needs good architecture. A modern school, college or university needs adequately built environments for extended space, teaching and learning concepts that follow the trends of the 21st century. Whether classroom or lecture hall, corridor, sports hall or refectory: all areas must fulfil different usage requirements and should be a place for pupils and students to live and learn.

In teaching, research and learning, innovative methods and the latest findings are increasingly being used to organise day-to-day operations. As in the modern office, traditional structures are increasingly being broken up and replaced by flexible concepts.

These increasingly respond to the needs of those involved and are characterised by multifunctional teaching and learning environments that combine open structures with closed areas for concentrated work and retreats for social interaction.

Requirements and solutions

Sound and noise protection

REQUIREMENTS

Nothing disturbs concentration more than noise. And so the quality of a door in schools or universities is also judged by its sound-absorbing properties. Nobody would dispute that classrooms or seminar rooms need to be as quiet as possible in order to support learning success. Undisturbed lessons and absolute silence during examinations are a must.

In everyday school life, sections with high noise levels should therefore be acoustically separated from classrooms or seminar rooms. Functional door systems from Novoferm offer architects the opportunity to creatively organise the interplay between pedagogy and interior design.

SELECTED NOVOFERM SOLUTIONS

Soundproof doors DB-1 type 50 with sturdy steel carcass, special sound insulation and lowerable special floor seal as a door to the examination room

Continuous load and durability

REQUIREMENTS

High user frequencies and frequent collisions with equipment and objects with a constantly changing flow of people - that's what a busy school day looks like. Fire and smoke protection closures must be able to withstand high loads in this environment and still guarantee a secure room closure to prevent the passage of smoke or fire. The "durability of self-closing" in accordance with DIN EN 1191 must also be tested and classified in accordance with DIN EN 14600.

Differences between hot and cold areas must also be taken into account. In addition, slight damage to building elements cannot be prevented even in normal school operations. Doors and gates must therefore be designed to be robust enough to withstand such defects without losing their function. In addition, dirt-prone rebate areas should be designed to be as easy to clean as possible.

SELECTED NOVOFERM SOLUTIONS

Stable and robust tubular frame doors (profile thickness 4 mm, sheet thickness up to 1.5 mm, ...)
Steel frames for classrooms with high stability and durability
Dirt-prone rebate areas on tubular frame doors can be completely covered with a plastic-coated Promaseal strip; this makes the doors particularly easy and quick to clean on a daily basis
Single and double-leaf T30 (EI2 30) or T90 (EI2 90) tubular frame doors in steel design with high quality and resistance even under extreme continuous loads and frequent operating errors
Multifunctional doors with stable sheet steel door construction and very good mechanical strength values
Steel doors where limited surface damage can be quickly repaired or repainted
Highly configurable contract doors from the Premio series in thick rebate or flush design have been successfully tested by independent material testing institutes as a unit consisting of door leaf, fittings and frame in the most demanding category C5; in this endurance test, at least 200,000 opening and closing cycles simulate a service life of around 20 years in fast motion

Transparent building / fire protection

REQUIREMENTS

Open, transparent structures are also of great importance in modern learning and teaching. Lecture theatres and seminar rooms flooded with daylight are at the top of the wish list, and not just for energy reasons. Wherever possible, integrated atriums in conjunction with large glass surfaces can extend visual axes and open up rooms.

Transparent building also promotes communication and the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas in precisely those places that are intended for this purpose. Architecture influences people's behaviour much more than is generally assumed. For example, glass surfaces spanning several storeys create atrium-like situations that counteract the feeling of being closed off and fulfil a place of learning with a quality of stay and well-being.

SELECTED NOVOFERM SOLUTIONS

Consistent appearance of all systems and any combination of doors, side panels and fanlights
All-glass walls in the T30 (EI2 30) version (also with integrated door) from Novoferm for transparent room partitions for open room design in the education sector
Tubular frame doors made of glass or metal in the T30 (EI2 30) and T90 (EI2 90) versions for transparent room experiences in the education sector
Fire-resistant glazing in G30, F30 or F90 versions as translucent window elements in the education sector
Continuous, multi-storey glass façades with F30 glazing with maximum transparency

EXAMPLES IN THE INSTALLED STATE

Up to 5 m high fire-resistant glazing

Cross-storey F30 glazing

Barrier-free building

REQUIREMENTS

A modern educational facility should be barrier-free for many reasons. Either to make the highly frequented school day as safe as possible, or to enable people with disabilities to participate fully in terms of inclusion. Threshold-free smoke protection doorsand "intelligent" safety systems that only close doors in an emergency are examples of the contributions that Novoferm can make with its building elements in terms of accessibility.

SELECTED NOVOFERM SOLUTIONS

Doors with electromechanical hold-open or holding magnets so that doors remain permanently open - they only close automatically in the event of danger, networked via smoke detection systems. "Thinking" security systems, only active in an emergency
Aluminium tubular frame doors T30 (EI2 30) C5 Sm with integrated automatic hold-open device for barrier-free movement
Smoke protection doors in threshold-free design
Handle height suitable for the disabled (850 mm) possible for all Novoferm doors
Automated swing door drives with corresponding safety sensors; also with additional protection of the secondary closing edges with anti-trap roller blinds

Escape route systems

REQUIREMENTS

Similar to office buildings, the guidelines for preventive fire protection in connection with the structural requirements for escape and rescue routes also apply to educational facilities. The regulations of DIN EN 179 and standard EN 1125 govern the use of automatically closing emergency exits and doors with panic exit devices.

Doors that must be self-closing may be kept open. Provided they have hold-open systems that cause the doors to close automatically in the event of smoke. It must also be possible to close them manually.

The likelihood of a panic breaking out depends on whether a building is being used by strangers or people familiar with the area. In all cases, people must be able to easily reach the escape and rescue routes provided.

SELECTED NOVOFERM SOLUTIONS

Multifunctional doors with panic locks with engaging external lever handles for access control by teachers
Multifunctional doors with anti-panic lock variants in accordance with DIN EN 179 and DIN EN 1125 with numerous fitting options
Emergency exit systems (lever handle and panic lock) in accordance with DIN EN 179 or anti-panic locks (anti-panic bars and locks) in accordance with DIN EN 1125 can be integrated into doors
Self-locking panic locks

Push or touch bars to DIN EN 1125 for quick and safe exit from the building
Escape door locking with additional escape door strike above the main lock

Multifunctionality and design

REQUIREMENTS

As in all types of private, public or commercial buildings, the security aspect is also of great importance in schools and universities. As educational facilities are often extensive complexes, a wide range of measures are required in terms of fire and smoke protection, burglary protection, access restrictions or sound and noise protection. And because children and young people who are cared for and taught here need to be protected from every possible danger, a wide range of components must also be used.

Modern door systems that are based on a standardised platform and fulfil different requirements are a good choice in such buildings. The variety of possible applications here lies in the technical equipment and is concealed in a standardised design.

Steel doors with the same appearance in combination with equally uniformly designed tubular frame systems cover the greatest need for security requirements without creating visual clutter.
