New requirements for sustainability and environmental claims from 27 September 2026

From 27 September 2026, new legal requirements will apply to sustainability and environmental claims in consumer advertising. These are based on the EU EmCo Directive (EU) 2024/825, which has been implemented in Germany through amendments to the Act against Unfair Competition (UWG).

The new regulations are intended to prevent consumers from being misled by general or insufficiently substantiated environmental claims. Claims such as ‘environmentally friendly’, ‘climate-friendly’, ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’ without further specification will no longer be permitted in future. Claims regarding CO₂ neutrality, as well as sustainability labels and corresponding graphic representations, must also be scrutinised carefully.

What does this mean for you as a retailer?

Please check your own media and documentation (websites, online shops, catalogues, price lists, etc.) for sustainability and environmental claims before using them further. This also applies to statements or representations that are taken from or derived from our product information. Statements must be specific, accurate and verifiable; for example, they must not refer to the entire product if, in fact, only a single component – such as the packaging – possesses the stated characteristic.

We would like to draw your attention to these requirements as a service. Responsibility for the advertising claims you use and their specific presentation to your customers lies with you as the advertising company.
 

What does this mean for Novoferm?
