Tips & tricks for garage doors
Electric garage doors are no longer a luxury. In fact, they are now being installed or retrofitted particularly frequently. No wonder, because they offer their users many advantages in everyday life.
Firstly, they are of course particularly easy to operate. Even remote switching over several hundred metres or from any location (via app) is possible. This means you no longer have to get out in bad weather and get wet before you can drive into your garage. Alternatively, you can operate your garage door when carrying bulky items in without having to put them down or make other contortions. An electric garage door also offers a considerable increase in security. On the one hand, the operator also prevents the door from opening in the event of unauthorised access. On the other hand, you protect your back and sensors or light barriers practically rule out injuries. There are also numerous possible additional features that can make your door even more functional and secure.
If you want to know the exact difference between electric and manual garage doors, how to retrofit the relevant systems, what electric garage doors cost and when garage doors with a door make sense, you've come to the right place.
The main difference between an electric and a manual garage door lies in the way it is opened. Manual doors are often opened using a rotary handle, which moves the door upwards once it has been operated and unlocked. In the electric version, the work is performed by a corresponding motor, which is usually mounted on the ceiling of the garage. The garage door is lifted via a belt drive or chain.
This type of door offers numerous advantages (already mentioned above). Otherwise, however, there are no special door types for electric or manual operation. Practically all available variants can be used, both with and without a motor: from up-and-over doors to sectional doors and swing doors. Roller doors are relatively often electric garage doors. Electric drives are somewhat more complicated to realise for swing doors. Here, more space is needed for the door leaves - and the same applies to the drive mechanism.
If you would also like to operate your existing garage door electrically in the future, this is not a problem. Retrofitting an appropriate operator system can be done relatively quickly in most cases. Installing a new door with an electric motor does not normally require any major structural changes to your garage - provided everything fits.
As there are actually a few things to consider with electric garage doors, you should have them installed by a specialist company. This usually involves five simple steps.
Consultation: To begin with, you will receive comprehensive advice on which options make particular sense in your case.
Measurement: The professionals take care of all the measuring work so that you can be sure of getting a perfectly fitting garage door.
Dismantling the old door if necessary: Of course, you do not have to dismantle and dispose of your garage door yourself.
Installation: The specialist company will carry out the installation in accordance with all applicable specifications - you will receive a door that works safely and reliably in the long term with a full guarantee.
Commissioning: Finally, let the professionals explain all the functions of your new door to you - they will always provide you with the right support, even in the long term.
The typical automatic garage door without major additional functions costs between €1,500 and €3,500 including installation. This range is due to the fact that different garage door types vary considerably in price. The operator itself often only accounts for a relatively small proportion of the total.
Up-and-over doors are usually the cheapest, followed by roller doors and then sectional doors. Swing gates are the most expensive. As the operator is also more complex for them, this means considerable additional costs in contrast to the other door types.
It always makes sense to have an additional door in the garage. This means you don't have to open the garage door every time you enter the room. This makes it less likely to get cold in the garage in winter and keeps the heat out in summer. This is particularly important if you use your garage not only to park your car, but also as a workshop, storage room or party location, for example. Building a side door is often impractical or even impossible. This is where electric garage doors with a door are the ideal solution.
